READ ALL ABOUT IT!

RUBY NEWS!

Ruby News! is the way I've come up with to get Ruby out there into the world... where she belongs... so she can do her thing!

Ruby’s thing has always had to do with what it takes to find *and share* your voice... no doubt because of my own personal struggle with it. Now as I find and share my voice, I do it with girls in mind. Because I imagine this:

I imagine how great girl voices combined with the power of well-told stories might help to balance and heal the world.

Imagine that.

Ruby News! #20 – “Ruby’s Belief”

One day in the month or so right after Hurricane Irene I ran into my filmmaker friend Ed Roy in Bank Square, the coffee shop I often go to write,

So I checked out your Ruby site.  I really like it.  But what’s missing for me is ‘What’s the central message?’

Ordinarily that would hurt to hear.  But instead I was excited when I said,

I know!  I know!  It’s missing!  I’ve been circling and circling, always feeling like I’m getting closer to it, and it’s taken all this time – years, really – wondering ‘What am I about??’ And I’ve gotten it!  I’ve GOT IT!!

Because at the very same time UNEXPECTED PLANS  ~ dancing lessons from the gods” was coming through me as collaged images, so was my clarity around Ruby’s core message.  (Hurricane Irene gave me a LOT lot lot.)

I’m in a great writing group so I cartooned Ruby speaking the central message and brought it to our next meeting for their feedback.  Kelly Kingman said,

It’s your Manifesto.

My Manifesto?  I have a Manifesto?  I suddenly felt like one of the big girls!  I have a Manifesto!  A Manifesto in 22 cartooned panels.  And I call it Ruby’s Belief.

Here it is…

RUBY’S BELIEF

2) Go over to Ruby’s Facebook fan page and “LIKE” it… And if you write “Ruby, I love what you believe!” on her Wall you could win an original piece of Ruby artwork.  (That’s a very cool prize : )

3) Let great girls know about it!!

BIG shout-outs!!

Because the process of getting Ruby’s Belief just as it is didn’t happen without help from others.

  • First and foremost, let the record show that Eve Ensler influences me greatly.  Her TED Talks and her play, I Am An Emotional Creature in particular, have gone in and gotten all mixed-up with what Ruby wants to say.
  • The great girls in my very awesome writing group — Sue Walsh, Aine Ni Cheallaigh, Nora Olsen and Kelly Kingman — who gave helpful input and boatloads of encouragement.
  • Peter Cary who looked at it early on in its birthing and approved in a way that let me know something good was in the process of synthesizing.
  • Ed Roy who offered two rounds of ‘good filmmaker’s eye’ tweaks that made a huge difference.
  • Emily-Anne Rigal whose very fine 17-year-old input I RELY UPON as I create stuff with girls in mind.
  • And Rob Penner who generously, selflessly and always good-naturedly worked his Photoshop magic for hours and hours, tirelessly accommodating my every request.

What matters?
Refining what you believe in.
Realize it!
